Rishi Sunak, in his first official visit to India since assuming the role of the UK Prime Minister, experienced a warm and traditional welcome.
Temple Visit and Traditional Welcome
Accompanied by his wife, who was elegantly dressed in a kurta with palazzo, and himself in trousers and a shirt, Sunak embarked on an early morning visit to a temple in India. Tightened security measures were evident in and around the temple premises. Upon arrival, the couple was accorded a traditional welcome.
Blessings from Swamis and Spiritual Leaders
Inside the temple, Sunak and his wife received blessings from swamis and senior leaders representing the Akshardham Mandir. These leaders conveyed a special message on behalf of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).
A Glimpse of Swaminarayan Akshardham
During his visit, the British Prime Minister was given a tour of Swaminarayan Akshardham, a sprawling 100-acre spiritual and cultural complex that showcases India’s rich traditions and ancient architecture. The complex also promotes the timeless Hindu spiritual principles of faith, devotion, and harmony.
Respectful Reverence Inside the Temple Complex
Inside the main temple complex, Rishi Sunak and his wife paid their respects to sacred images and marveled at the intricate art and architecture. Their visit was marked by moments of reflection and spiritual connection.
Homage to Mahatma Gandhi
Following their temple visit, Sunak proceeded to Rajghat, where he joined other delegates in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi, an important and symbolic gesture of respect.
Celebrating Hindu Roots and Support for G20
Rishi Sunak expressed pride in his Hindu heritage and hoped to find time to visit another temple in India. He also mentioned plans to revisit some of their favorite restaurants in Delhi. Sunak conveyed his “enormous respect” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed his eagerness to support him in making the G20 Summit a resounding success.
Trade Talks and Bilateral Relations
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi and Rishi Sunak engaged in discussions to deepen trade ties and boost investments. Their talks built upon previous meetings held during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima earlier in the year, where they had discussed topics ranging from a potential India-UK free trade agreement to innovation, science, and strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
